When Suicide is the Option

"Could suicide be the only option"? Many have asked this life-changing question at one point. For some the suicidal thoughts were conquered after getting help. Others keep battling the tendencies daily barely hanging on. While others choose to give in.

Anxieties from unmet expectations are likely suicide triggers at certain times (i.e., towards the year's end) and situations.

Last night at 11PM, a 37-year-old Bollywood actor took his life. He left a note on how his estates should be split between his 3-year old, parents and sisters, and that no should blame themselves for his death.

A bullied 14 year old teenage boy, Jack Burns, hanged himself on December 1. He was an accomplished dancer and TV star.

Some stories make the headlines but what about the unreported? It is easy to reel out statistics globally or locally but what next?

Suicidal thoughts-How it feels
Dealing with hurt feels like to having multiple knife stabs to the chest with the knief still stuck in the middle of the heart. Being plaqued with paralized feelings at the same time due to helplessness for inability to stop the gushing blood. Suicide must be the option out. Suicide triggers comes from the constant rage and betrayal that the "knife stabs" was inflicted by a trusted friend, family member, partner, friend of a friend's etc. No one is evening noticing the shooting pains, the rage, the confusion. This inner struggles are bourne proudly without a trace most of the time.
Jack Burn, 14

The feelings of unworthiness, guilt and rejection envelopes my whole being like a deep dense darkness, steadily choking. The darkness numbs my marrows, I keep struggling to breath, to stay awake even while asleep. I feel too weak to fight back, and seem to have lost the will . Maybe suicide will end it all?. Other times the inflictor is very aware of the grave harm but chooses either to cower and watch from a distance. He/She/they keep hovering over me either oblivious, unperturbed or minimizing my actions as a passing phase. Suicide must end it all. (Shared by Anoynmous).

Why is there no Decline in Suicide rates?

Mental illness is no respecter of status, gender, age or nationality.  Why is suicidal death rates not declining? Existing gaps in policy action and practise in the mental healthcare sector still exists, even in the most advanced mentally aware countries.

Ari Behn
Consider Norway. Despite several action plans, improved, knowledge and treatment, suicide rates hasn'nt decline in the last 20 years. Lack of treatment and societal conditions has been pointed as main reasons. The national suicide prevention programme was in 1993, the second country in the world  after Finland. Experts faulted the lack of structured follow-up and evaluation measures after lauching another  action plan in 2014. (Øivind Ekeberg, Erlend Hem, 2019- Division of Mental Health and Addiction, Oslo University Hospital)

Now is the time to take  alternative action whether there is
policy gaps or not. Its more than just calling for collective action. It involves individualized proactiveness. Taking action individually by focusing  more on empowering ourselves with more information or prevention tools. Including the ability to be empathetic and
recognizing the warning signs, on-time.

This also means doing everything within and above (if need be) our reach to help, either as helpers, carers, someone you know or someone you just chanced upon. I am hoping the info from Suicide.Org about suicide causes, signs and trggers is one step closer to making each and everyone of us more more alert.
