In Nigeria,11-55% of female adolescent sexual coersion and abuse has been reported and 15-40% in sub-saharan Africa(Juwon et al,2006).There are so many unreported/recorded cases of rape due to fear, stigma and lack of proper data recording process.

However,the victims of sexual abuse suffer severe physical, mental and emotional trauma.Studies by Jewkes et. al,2010 indicates that the impact of sexual abuse may include a combination or all of the following;
 1.Physical Injuries
 2.Fatique
 3.Chronic headaches
 4.Depression
 5.Stress disorders
 6.Suicide/Suicide attempt
 7.Sexual Dysfunction
 8.Alcohol and Drug abuse
 9.Fear
 10.Stigma

The Sexual Offences Bill (SB. 279) was passed into law on June 2,2015 is way overdue because it had been pending in the Senate since 2013. It was sponsored by Senator Chris Anyanwu to redefine and consolidate existing laws on sexual offences in Nigeria.

At the same time, this new law on Sexual Offences is a welcome development to help victims to heal psychologically.

We should be Optimistic that government, its agencies and the judicial system will give priority to implementing this new law curb sexual abuse.
Nevertheless, psychological, social, cultural and other factors interact to determine if a victim of sexual abuse will ever recover from the trauma.

The crippling effect of fear that the attacker could be locking in the shadows. waiting to strike again can make recovery for the victim stale.

This new law may give victim's renewed hope, power and courage that can motivate them to come out of the dark and speak up knowing that help is reachable.

Moreover, getting justice based on this new law that prescribe  life inprisonment or 10-14 years jail term for sexual predators is a triumph for victims and their families.

The triumph over an attacker will give victims a sense of control over their life.
The feelings of helplessness and lack of control over their own lives is inevitable for the sexually abused, they may loose control of their mental state, emotional and social balance.

Therefore, the taste of victory may restore the sense of control over their lives when combined with professional therapeutic intervention to enable them cope emotional and socially and be integrated back into their normal daily routine.
