Our bodies are made of extraordinarily complex systems and illness is caused by a multitude of factors and not by a single causal factor. The context in which an individual lives is of great importance on health status and quality of life
Whether they are rich or poor, many people fail to see the link between their habits and their health. They may regard enjoying good health as a matter of chance or as something over which they have little control. Such a fatalistic view holds many back from improving their health and leading a more productive life.
In reality, whatever your financial circumstances, there are basic steps you can take to protect and greatly improve your own health and that of your family. Is doing so worth the effort? By all means! You can increase the quality of your life and avoid needlessly shortening it.
When you ask most people for a definition of health, they talk about physical health only. In reality though, physical health is just one aspect of a complete health that relates to anything concerning our bodies as physical entities. Our mental, emotional and socio-cultural well-being are other equally integral aspects of the definition of a complete health.
Health has been defined as a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity (the constitution of World Health Organization).
Therefore, a holistic view of our overall health gives us a beam of hope that the route or path to achieving and maintaining “complete physical, mental and social well-being” is not so unattainable. But only a conscious and determined effort to apply these principles is all it takes to attain and maintain an enviable health status.
Exploring the meaning, determinants, significance, care and prevention of these 3 components in the definition of health will provide a holistic view of health.
